Celebrating Berenice Abbott
"I didn’t decide to be a photographer; I just happened to fall into it."
Born on this day in 1898 in Springfield, OH, Berenice Abbott was an artist of limitless imagination who devoted her life to photography. She began her photographic career in 1923 as an apprentice to her friend, Man Ray, in his Paris studio. In 1929, Abbott returned to the United States and, seeing America with a fresh and enriched perspective, began what is perhaps her best-known project, a series of iconic photographs of New York City.
