Flip Schulke was one of America’s premier photojournalists for more than forty-five years. Through his close friendship with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he covered nearly every major civil-rights story in the South from the 1950s until Dr. King’s assination in 1968.
For many years, Schulke was also a contract photographer for Life magazine.
Three years before Mohammad Ali won his first heavyweight boxing championship, Flip Schulke took this photograph of him boxing in a hotel pool. Eventhough LIFE didn’t run with this image, it has become one of the most famous photographs of the legendary boxer.
