“Making art has first of all to do with honesty. My first lesson was to see objectively, to erase all ‘meaning’ of the thing seen. Then only, could the real meaning of it be understood and felt.” -Ellsworth Kelly
Happy birthday Ellsworth Kelly! The artist, who was born in New York City, celebrates his 90th birthday today!Separated from the American art world while in Europe, Kelly developed his distinctive method of painting, which features canvases painted in a single color, at times in isolation and other times grouped with different colored canvases. These works echo Kelly’s desire to separate himself from the traditional roles of composition and the artist’s hand.
Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane photographed this pictured Ellsworth Kelly in 2011.
