    Lichtenstein Retrospective

“The one thing everyone hated was commercial art; apparently they didn’t hate that enough, either.” -Roy Lichtenstein

New York-born artist Roy Lichtenstein was motivated to create works that no one would want to hang on their walls. However, a solo show of such works at Leo Castelli Gallery in 1962 garnered him critical acclaim and notoriety in the art world.

Most of his best-known images come from this period in the mid-1960s, including his comic book pictures. However, surprisingly, there aren’t that many of them; these works fill only one room at the new Lichtenstein retrospective at London’s Tate Modern.

Lichtenstein also tried to apply his comic book style to all kinds of art that weren’t Pop at all. This included his own versions of works by predecessors such as Monet and Picasso, and of themes including the nude, classical Chinese painting, and geometrical abstraction.

Lichtenstein: A Retrospective is on view at Tate Modern, in Bankside, London, from February 21 to May 27.

Friday, December 21 marks the end of the Mayan long-count calendar. On this day, doomsayers believe the world will end.

For those of you that aren’t bothered by this prediction, here are some art events to enjoy this week.

    Lost Lichtenstein Returned

A painting by Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein has been miraculously found in a New York warehouse after 40 years!

Electric Cord (1961) disappeared from New York’s Leo Castelli Gallery in 1970, after being sent out to be cleaned. The work re-emerged this summer when Barbara Castelli was notified by the Lichtenstein Foundation that someone was trying to sell it.

At a press conference yesterday, Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara and the FBI confirmed that Electric Cord has finally been returned to Barbara Bertozzi Castelli, the widow of art dealer Leo Castelli.

    Inaugural Print

Roy Lichtenstein’s Inaugural Print (1977) was created for the Democratic National Committee, for the Inauguration of President Jimmy Carter. As such, it was never offered for sale in galleries, but was given (or sold) to top donors to the Democratic National Committee.

    The Oval Office

The Oval Office is one of Roy Lichtenstein’s most desirable, iconic, and current prints!

The work was created in 1992, for the Artists for Freedom of Expression Project, to benefit the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Citizen Vote, and select candidates in that year’s election. The image was also reproduced as a campaign button.

In creating this magnificent print, Lichtenstein researched the interior of the Oval Office in the White House, incorporating some authentic decorative details, including paintings that had once hung there!

    “Lost” Lichtenstein Resurfaces

A painting by Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein has been miraculously found in a New York warehouse after 40 years!

Electric Cord (1961) disappeared from New York’s Leo Castelli gallery in 1970, after being sent out to be cleaned. The work re-emerged last week when Barbara Castelli was notified by the Lichtenstein Foundation that someone was trying to sell it.

Lawyers for Barbara Castelli, who inherited the gallery after her husband’s death, say the painting is worth US$4 million.

However, a judge has issued a temporary order barring the artwork from being removed from the warehouse.

    Happy Birthday, Dennis Hopper

Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) wasn’t just an Academy Award-nominated actor, director, screenwriter, and notorious bad boy. He was also a visual artist who created acclaimed photographs, paintings, prints, and even the cover art for the Ike & Tina Turner/Phil Spector collaboration, River Deep—Mountain High.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Hopper’s photographs have a casually cinematic quality to them, whether focusing on his famous friends and fellow artists—such as these portraits of James Rosenquist, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol (and that’s Warhol’s portrait of Hopper, top left)—or strangers, as in his iconic Biker Couple (1961).
